A steroid care card lets healthcare professionals know you take steroid medicines. This information is vital in emergency situations so that they know that you can’t miss doses of your steroid medication. Adrenal crisis can happen if they do not know to keep giving you steroids. The card also alerts them that your body might need extra help to deal with the injury, operation or illness.

Protecting your bones

The key to successful steroid management is to be aware of the potential side effects and work to prevent, or reduce, them where possible. Reduction in steroid dose may be necessary if side effects are unmanageable or intolerable (Figure 4). If this is unsuccessful, changing to another type of steroid or dosing regimen is necessary before abandoning treatment altogether. Prednisone’s side effects typically improve once you stop taking the drug, but for those weeks or months you are taking it, and if you’re on a long-term dose or dealing with long-term after-effects, it can be tough.

If you notice you’re thirsty, or need to urinate more than usual, tell your doctor. Also, talk to them about whether you need to carry a steroid card. Taking steroid tablets long term

Your doctor may start you on a high dose of steroids before you see a specialist to prevent possible loss of vision. As corticosteroids can cause weakening of the bones your doctor will probably suggest you take calcium and vitamin D (to help absorb the calcium) supplements at the same time. You may be given both a course of oral and also rectal steroids simultaneously. Intravenous steroids are usually given to people when they are admitted to hospital.

The higher the dose of prednisolone that you take and the longer you take it for, the greater the chance of side effects. You’re less likely to get side effects if you take a relatively low dose of prednisolone daily. Your doctor will probably want to reduce your dose gradually over several weeks to prevent these side effects.
